about
Ireland’s Direct Provision refugee system has been condemned as illegal, inhuman, and degrading.
I’ve been teaching guitar at the Direct Provision centre in my town and have gotten to know many of the residents. Calm Down came out of my anger at a system that damages already vulnerable people. They want a normal life with dignity while awaiting processing. Instead, they are kept in limbo for years while their deplorable living conditions are ignored. The inaction of the Irish government is shameful.
Please support advocacy organizations like MASI, Nasc, Irish Refugee Council, and Doras and join their campaigns to put pressure on the Irish Government to make changes to the system. Or get involved in grassroots organizing, fundraising, and giving of your time can make a big impact on asylum seekers waiting in Direct Provision. 🙏
lyrics
Trapped behind the door
No one can hear them now
So easy to ignore
So easy to keep down
Hopes and dreams assured
Now trampled on the ground
And all we give is maybe
Some day you’ll make it out
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could you know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could we know what it feels like, feels like
What they crying for?
Their tears we won’t allow
While we sob in the Dáil
Our history resounds
Shoulder to shoulder
Ireland’s call we answer proud
But when they’re screaming save me
Our silence speaks so loud
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could you know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could we know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could you know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could we know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could you know what it feels like, feels like
Don’t tell me to calm down
How could we know what it feels like, feels like
